A key from the outside locks or unlocks the outside lever; the inside lever is always free, so staff control access from the hallway side.
About this mortise lock
A mortise lock fits a pocket cut into the door edge, which gives a stronger, longer-wearing lock than a bored cylindrical lock. The function sets how the lever, thumbturn and key behave, and most commercial mortise locks take a separate mortise cylinder or interchangeable core.
